About UsChristiana Fire Company is located in New Castle County, Delaware and covers 36 square miles of first due residential and commercial property, as well as mutual aid with most of the county. We are a combination company with full time and part time employees who work hand in hand with our volunteers to serve the area. Christiana staffs in house crews 24/7, 365 and responds to over 17,000 fire, EMS, and rescue incidents.
Interested in Applying for Volunteer Membership?
- There is no previous fire service experience necessary to join CFC
- There are no residency requirements to join
- We accept applications for firefighting operations and administrative duties
- Training will be provided at no cost to you!
- Individuals with previous fire service experience are also encouraged to apply as your training will be evaluated for reciprocity
- We only offer observational ride alongs for potential applicants. (See process below)
Joining CFC as a Non-Experienced Member
If you are interested in joining as a non-experienced member who does not possess any firefighting training certs, we will send you to the Delaware State Fire School (DSFS) for Firefighter 1 and 2 training. This class is offered in two formats. The normal format, usually offered in the fall and spring, is two weekday nights per week 6pm-10pm and every other Saturday and Sunday 8am-5pm for a period of approximately 3-4 months. The other format is the accelerated program and is usually offered over the summer. This format is Monday through Friday 8am-5pm for approximately 4-5 weeks.
After successful completion of Firefighter 1 and 2, you would attend our in-house Engine Operations Class and after successful completion you would be cleared to operate in interior firefighting positions.
Certified/Active Firefighters will also have to opportunity to be sent to Fire Department Training Network with CFC.
Joining CFC as a Pre-Qualified Member
If you already posses Firefighter 1 and CPR certifications, you will follow the below steps to join CFC:
- Three (3) observational ride alongs before submitting an application (mandatory)*
- Completed application with the completion of a background check
- Previous Training Records
*Ride alongs are observational only and must be scheduled in advance. Ride alongs are only scheduled between 9am-9pm. If coming from a considerable distance, ride alongs may stay over night. This must be coordinated prior to coming for your first ride along.
Once an application has been received, the prospect is notified to complete all necessary documentation for consideration.
