Christiana Volunteers Annual Bear Run in Rememberance of 9/11 - A.I. DuPont Hospital
September 22, 2009
Volunteers from the Christiana Fire Company went to A.I. Dupont Hospital for Children in remembrance of 9/11. Christiana Fire Company has done this for this last 8 years. We have seen hundreds of kids in that time. We give out bears and plastic fire helmets along with fire prevention materials.
This all came to be in 2002, when the Christiana Fire Company was given 200 bears from Build A Bear Workshop in remembrance of our Brothers who made the ultimate sacrifice on 9/11. We sat down as a committee and decided to hand them out at A.I. Dupont so the kids would know we were out there still protecting them and their parents.
From that first year, we have been getting our bears from the Delaware State Police program of Beanie Babies for Iraq. Michelle Foraker, a now retired DSP officer, has helped for the last 7 years with giving us bears she could not send over to the children of Iraq. We feel as a whole fire company this is a very worthy cause that we truly believe in and the kids and parents truly enjoy. The smiles from the kids warm all of our hearts.
As long as the bears come in we will be there in honor of those who gave their all on 9/11.
