On September 2nd at 2033 hours box 1217 was sounded for a fire in a multiple dwelling at 5600 Byron Ct in Village of Canterbury Apartments. Members at station 12 were cleaning up from a drill and quickly responding with the Engine and Duty Chief. As both unit were making the turn onto Newtown Rd the box was upgraded to a working alarm adding RIT, and an extra Engine and Truck.
Engine 12 and Deputy Chief 6 arrived to find fire showing from the 3rd floor. Engine 12 established a water supply and stretched an attack line to the third floor. As the crew pushed into the apartment Firefighter Moorhead located a unconscious male. While the nozzleman (Ross) maintained the attack line the officer (McPartland,J) and back up firefighter (Comella) removed a unconscious male.
The patient was removed down three flights of steps and into the front yard. He was turned over to Ambulance 12 and Medic 2A. The patient was transported to Christiana trauma center in serious condition.
As apparatus arrived crews mounted an interior attack however the fire had overtaken the attic and parts of the roof were falling into the stairways. Command ordered a orderly withdraw and the fire was knocked down with large caliber streams.
The fire then transitioned back into an offensive operation. Crews reentered the building and conducted secondary searches and extinguished hot spots.
Units operated for Six hours. There was one Firefighter injury.
The Delaware State Fire marshal is currently conducting an investigation into the cause of the fire.
